Côte d’Ivoire : Mamadou Hawa Gassama libéré par grâce présidentielle après 7 mois à la MACA
Malian politician Mamadou Hawa Gassama has been released after seven months and seven days of detention at the Abidjan Detention and Correction Center (MACA). His release from prison follows a presidential pardon granted by decree of the Ivorian head of state, Alassane Ouattara .
Sentenced on January 30 to three years in prison, with a ban on residence and a fine of five million FCFA for insulting the Ivorian president, he was preparing an appeal at the time of his release.
His lawyer, Mamadou Ismaïla Konaté , welcomed the act of clemency that ended his client's detention. This decision comes amid a sensitive climate between Abidjan and Bamako, where the case had sparked numerous political reactions.
The presidential pardon suspends the execution of the sentence, without overturning the conviction. Mamadou Hawa Gassama is now free.
