Alerte Paludisme : L'OMS sonne l'alarme face à une recrudescence mondiale, 95 % des 610 000 décès en Afrique

The World Health Organization (WHO) is issuing an urgent appeal : malaria is experiencing a sharp rise worldwide, targeting almost exclusively the African continent.

🌍 Mortality: A heavy price paid by Africa and children

  1. 610,000 deaths were caused by the disease in 2024.
  2. 95% of this mortality is concentrated in Africa.
  3. Children under five are the most vulnerable, accounting for almost 76% of deaths .

Three nations alone bear almost half of this mortality:

  1. Nigeria : 31.9% of deaths.
  2. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) : 11.7% of deaths.
  3. Niger : 6.1% of deaths.

📈 Increasing number of cases and chronic underfunding

The total number of global cases has reached 282 million , a dramatic increase of 9 million in just one year.

This worsening situation comes amid critical underfunding : only $3.9 billion was mobilized in 2024, which is far from the $9.3 billion needed for 2025 to ensure an effective response.

🦟 Malaria: A disease that remains as deadly as ever

Transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes, malaria remains one of the deadliest diseases. Its initial symptoms (fever, chills, vomiting, flu-like symptoms) can rapidly progress to serious, even fatal, complications if left untreated.

💔 Double blow for Africa: The Cholera emergency

Meanwhile, Africa is facing its worst cholera outbreak in 25 years. In November 2025, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reported:

  1. More than 300,000 confirmed or suspected cases .
  2. More than 7,000 deaths .
