Côte d’Ivoire : un camion de mammographie mobile pour rapprocher le dépistage du cancer du sein
Côte d'Ivoire has taken a significant step forward in the fight against breast cancer. On March 18, 2026, the Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, Pierre Dimba, inaugurated a mobile mammography unit in Abidjan-Treichville, designed to improve access to screening, particularly in rural and remote areas.
This innovative device, funded by Roche laboratories, is part of a partnership between the Ministry of Health, through the National Cancer Control Program (PNLCa), and the Coalition of Cancer Control Organizations in Côte d'Ivoire (COLCC). Costing approximately 211 million CFA francs, this mobile unit is equipped with a state-of-the-art mammography machine and an ultrasound scanner.
The objective is clear: to bring healthcare services closer to the population, reduce inequalities in access to care, and promote early diagnosis, a key factor in the fight against this disease. According to the minister, this "mammomobile" marks a transformation in the care model by making it possible to reach women who live far from traditional healthcare facilities.
Health authorities also emphasize the importance of public-private partnerships in strengthening the health system, particularly through the deployment of modern equipment and the training of medical personnel.
In Ivory Coast, breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women, with more than 3,800 new cases recorded each year and more than 2,000 deaths, according to international data.
With this new mobile tool, the Ivorian government intends to accelerate large-scale screening campaigns and offer more women a chance of early detection, essential to improve the chances of recovery.
