Hantavirus: les pays touchés par des cas confirmés
Here is a summary of the countries that have reported cases of nationals infected with hantavirus, after the detection of an outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Currently, seven patients of six different nationalities are classified as confirmed cases and one probable case has been reported, according to an AFP tally based on official data.
Three others have died: two of them had been declared positive, the third being a probable case, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO).
A Dutch couple who had travelled in South America before boarding a ship in Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st, were the first to die.
The husband, aged 70, presented symptoms on April 6 and died on April 11. His body was removed from the ship during its stopover from April 22 to 24 in Saint Helena, an island in the South Atlantic.
Since no hantavirus screening test has been carried out, it is considered a "probable case", according to the WHO.
His 69-year-old wife also left the ship in Saint Helena, feeling unwell. Her condition worsened during a flight to Johannesburg on April 25, and she died in hospital the following day. Her hantavirus infection was confirmed on May 4.
The third Dutch case involves the ship's doctor, who reported symptoms on April 30. A test revealed he was positive for the Andes strain of the virus on May 6. He was evacuated to the Netherlands the same day, after a stopover in Cape Verde. He has been isolated and his condition is stable.
Two British nationals have been confirmed infected and a third is considered a probable case.
The first Briton fell ill on April 24 and was evacuated three days later from Ascension Island in the Atlantic to South Africa, where he was placed in intensive care. The presence of hantavirus in his case was confirmed on May 2.
The second British national, who worked on board the ship, reported symptoms on April 27 and tested positive on May 6. He was evacuated from Cape Verde to the Netherlands on May 7. His condition is stable.
A third British national left the Hondius on April 14 in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic and was treated there in isolation. He reported symptoms on April 28. The WHO classified him as a "probable case" pending test results.
A German woman who had a fever on April 28 and developed pneumonia died on May 2 on board the ship.
A sample taken post-mortem was sent to the Netherlands, where tests confirmed infection with the virus.
His body remained on board the Hondius, which is due to arrive in the Netherlands on Sunday evening.
One of the Spanish passengers evacuated from the MV Hondius has tested positive, according to a preliminary result. Placed in isolation in a military hospital in Madrid, "he is asymptomatic and in good general condition," the Ministry of Health announced on May 11.
A Swiss national disembarked from the Hondius in Saint Helena on April 22 and flew to Switzerland on April 27 via South Africa and Qatar. He began experiencing symptoms on May 1, after arriving in Switzerland. He was treated in isolation and tested positive for the virus.
A French woman repatriated from the Hondius fell ill on May 10th and tested positive for COVID-19, subsequently isolating herself. Her condition deteriorated during the night of May 10th to 11th, according to French authorities.
One of the 17 Americans on board the ship tested positive. Another is experiencing "mild symptoms," the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported on May 10.
