Drame évité de justesse à Prollo : 53 passagers sauvés, un corps repêché à l’embouchure du Cavally
A serious maritime accident was narrowly averted on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Prollo, a town in the Tabou department. A boat in distress carrying 53 people and a body was rescued by maritime affairs officers at the mouth of the Cavally River and the Atlantic Ocean.
Alerted by their superiors based in San-Pédro, the Maritime Affairs (AFMA) teams intervened urgently to provide assistance to the pirogue whose engine had broken down in the middle of the crossing.
On board were 28 men, 21 women, 14 children, and one body. All were safely transferred to the Ivorian bank, bringing an end to a situation that could have turned into a tragedy.
According to authorities, the boat had left the village of Kounonkoui, Liberia, bound for Cavalla, for a burial ceremony. The crew was able to raise the alarm thanks to their adherence to technical inspection procedures, thus facilitating a rapid rescue response.
The AFMA management took the opportunity to reiterate the imperative need to respect maritime safety rules, including the registration of vessels, regular technical inspections and the mandatory wearing of life jackets.
A welcome reminder in an area where travel by lagoon and sea remains frequent and sometimes perilous.
