Yamoussoukro : L’orpaillage clandestin menace l’accès à l’eau potable

In Yamoussoukro, water security has become a critical issue. The proliferation of illegal gold mining is damaging treatment infrastructure and jeopardizing public health. The recent case of the Zambakro plant, forced to shut down, underscores the urgency of the situation.

The Zambakro incident: A warning sign

Due to extreme turbidity of the raw water — a phenomenon directly linked to the discharge of sludge by gold miners upstream — SODECI had to temporarily suspend production.

  1. Health is the priority: In accordance with safety standards, treatment will not resume until the physico-chemical parameters have stabilized.
  2. Immediate impact: This technical outage is causing severe shortages in several surrounding neighborhoods and villages, paralyzing households and the local economy.

An ecological disaster with technical consequences

Illegal gold mining does more than just pollute the water; it permanently destroys the regional ecosystem through two main mechanisms:

  1. Soil reworking: Artificial erosion saturates waterways with sediment. With the arrival of rain, this runoff intensifies, making raw water virtually impossible to treat without massive additional technical costs.
  2. Chemical pollution: The uncontrolled use of toxic substances during extraction threatens to contaminate groundwater and catchment points.

Towards a comprehensive crisis management approach

While SODECI is mobilizing its teams for a return to normal, the purely technical response shows its limitations in the face of a structural problem.

The challenge is twofold: It is about protecting the environment while guaranteeing the health safety of the population.

Essential levers for action:

  1. Increased repression: Strengthen the intervention of security forces against illegal sites.
  2. Institutional coordination: Involve local authorities and rural communities more in monitoring.
  3. Sustainable management: Implementing long-term water resource preservation policies.

Conclusion

The shutdown of the Zambakro plant is a serious warning. Without vigorous and concerted action to stop illegal gold mining, the fundamental right of Yamoussoukro's residents to safe drinking water will remain at risk.
