Le Sénégal ou le Maroc champion d'Afrique ? Kylian Mbappé tranche... puis se rétracte
With its decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco by default (Senegal has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has embarrassed the football world. Kylian Mbappé, captain and star of the French national team, even stumbled when discussing the status of the Senegalese team.
In a statement reported by M6, the French striker, whose team will face Senegal on Tuesday, June 16th at 7 PM GMT, was unsure whether to declare Senegal the African champions or defer to the CAF's verdict. Ultimately, fearing involvement in a case currently before the sports tribunal, Kylian Mbappé backtracked and decided to remain neutral.
"It's good to start against Senegal. They are the African champions. Uh, I don't know if it's them or Morocco, we'll try to stay out of that," said the French player born to a Moroccan mother.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seized in March by Senegal, could render its decision within a year.
