Mondial-2026: New York donne temporairement à deux rues les noms de deux légendes du foot
The City Council's decision, reviewed by AFP, was greeted by a crowd gathered at the corner of West 50th Street and 6th Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan, to witness the unveiling of the "Thierry Henry Way" sign.
"Today, the city of New York paid tribute to one of the greatest players of all time," wrote Virginia Maloney, a New York City Councilwoman, on Instagram.
The former star of English club Arsenal and FC Barcelona, who was part of the French team that won the 1998 World Cup, appeared in a video on Instagram to thank the city and its mayor Zohran Mamdani, "a true Arsenal fan, as everyone knows".
"My family will be very honored," added the former player, 48, who had further enhanced his notoriety in the United States by playing for five seasons with the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer (MLS) until 2014.
The city also renamed the intersection of Shea Road and Meridian Road, in the borough of Queens, in honor of Brazilian legend Pelé.
The street names will remain in place until November 1st.
