[Mondial-2026] Présentation des équipes africaines: La Côte d’Ivoire, une histoire encore à écrire
Back on the world stage after a twelve-year absence, Ivory Coast will participate in its fourth World Cup in 2026. Led by a talented new generation and the still fresh memory of their continental triumph, the Elephants dream of finally getting past the first round and writing the most beautiful page in their history in the competition.
Three-time African champions, Ivory Coast are preparing to return to the world stage after the 2006, 2010 and 2014 editions. The Elephants will participate in this tournament with the objective of finally getting past the first round, a hurdle they have never managed to overcome despite several generations of talented players.
Since its first World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006, the Ivory Coast national team has often shown immense potential. But fate has never been on its side. For its debut in the competition, Ivory Coast was drawn into a particularly tough group consisting of Argentina, the Netherlands, and Serbia and Montenegro. Despite the talented generation led by Didier Drogba, the Elephants were eliminated in the group stage. They did, however, make history by securing their first World Cup victory against Serbia and Montenegro (3-2).
The 2010 edition in South Africa and the 2014 edition in Brazil also left a sense of unfinished business. Despite boasting a golden generation including Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré, Gervinho, and Salomon Kalou, Ivory Coast fell short of the round of 16 each time. A few minor details and, at times, a lack of luck prevented the Elephants from converting their potential into a historic achievement.
After missing out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the Ivorian national team made a remarkable comeback, securing their place at the 2026 World Cup following a controlled qualifying campaign. This return comes in a particularly favorable context, buoyed by their continental triumph at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, a success that has restored confidence to the entire nation.
Ivory Coast will therefore arrive in North America with renewed ambitions. The goal will no longer be simply to participate, but to establish itself as a nation capable of competing with the best teams in the world. To achieve this, the coach can count on a promising generation embodied by Yann Diomandé, Chris Inao Oulai, Amad Diallo, Oumar Diakité, and Simon Adingra—all players destined to write a new chapter in the history of Ivorian football.
Drawing on its experience, its rich pool of talent, and the momentum generated by its recent continental title, Ivory Coast hopes that the 2026 World Cup will finally be the one where it achieves ultimate success. More than just participation, this fourth global adventure represents an opportunity to shatter a glass ceiling and definitively establish the Elephants among the elite nations of international football.
