Cameroun : Le MRC Exige la Libération de ses Militants Arrêtés à l'Ouest et Dénonce une Répression Politique
The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) is taking a stand following a wave of arrests in the Western region.
The opposition party directly accuses the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM) of being behind what it calls arbitrary arrests and systematic harassment of its members.
In a press release dated November 5, the MRC reported the arrest of 20 of its activists in Haut-Nkam, Baham, and Dschang. These arrests reportedly took place during the peaceful demonstrations that followed the recent elections.
Maurice Kamto's former party strongly condemns these actions, seeing them as deliberate maneuvers to silence all dissenting voices and stifle democratic debate . Among the repressive tactics denounced, the MRC cites:
The party emphasizes that it has "never broken or burned anything" and that it has "always declared [its] demonstrations" to the authorities. According to the MRC, the sole reason for the arrest and harassment of its members is the exercise of their civic rights and their commitment to denouncing bad governance .
Consequently, the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon sets out several firm demands :
Furthermore, in a publication made on the same day, the interim president of the party, Mamadou Mota , urged his activists to remain vigilant and to leave their homes to avoid being hunted down and arrested in the neighborhoods by the security forces.
