CAN 2025 : Le duel Sénégal-Maroc se déplace devant les tribunaux

The dispute stemming from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco has taken an unprecedented legal turn. Between the CAF's withdrawal of the title and the trial of supporters in Rabat, tensions continue to escalate between the two major African footballing nations.

1. The battle for the title: Heading to the CAS

The earthquake occurred on March 17, when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) officially stripped Senegal of the trophy . The reason: the appeals committee equated the temporary departure of the Senegalese players during the final to a forfeit .

  1. Dakar's response: The Senegalese Football Federation calls the ruling "absurd." It has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) via an expedited procedure, hoping to reclaim its title before the 2026 World Cup.
  2. Rabat's position: For its part, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) is sticking to its position, claiming to have acted in strict compliance with sporting regulations.

2. Crisis diplomacy and accusations of corruption

Faced with the risk of a breakdown, the president of CAF, Patrice Motsepe , is making numerous trips back and forth between Dakar and Rabat.

"We must preserve the unity of African football." — Patrice Motsepe during his meeting with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

While mentioning a possible reform of the AFCON regulations to avoid such entanglements in the future, the CAF boss firmly rejected the rumors of corruption that are polluting the debates.

3. The criminal aspect: The fate of the supporters remains uncertain

The case now extends beyond the pitch. In Rabat, the appeal trial of 18 Senegalese supporters has opened after several postponements.

What you need to know about the procedure:

  1. Initial convictions: Sentences of 3 months to one year of imprisonment for hooliganism, violence and trespassing.
  2. Human Rights: Morocco's National Human Rights Council (CNDH) is closely monitoring the case. After visiting the detainees, the institution asserts that no violations of their rights have been reported and that the principle of presumption of innocence remains paramount.
  3. Legal distinction: It should be noted that the Moroccan Federation is not a party to this criminal aspect; the case directly pits the supporters against the Moroccan justice system for acts of public disorder.

As eyes turn towards Lausanne (seat of the CAS), the unity of African football is being severely tested by this conflict which mixes sporting pride, interpretation of laws and diplomatic issues.
