Détournement de fonds humanitaires au Burkina : 5 ans de prison ferme pour l'ex-ministre Laure Zongo

Burkina Faso's justice system has ruled. On Friday, March 27, 2026, the Ouagadougou court delivered its verdict in the massive corruption case that rocked the Ministry of Humanitarian Action. At the heart of the scandal: the embezzlement of more than 3 billion CFA francs (approximately 4.6 million euros) intended for internally displaced persons.

Notable convictions

The court handed down exemplary sentences to punish the opaque management of relief funds:

  1. Laure Zongo (Former Minister): Found guilty, she receives a 5-year prison sentence .
  2. Camille Yé Yaké (Head of the financial department): He receives the heaviest sentence with 11 years in prison and a fine of more than 700,000 euros.
  3. Other defendants: One officer was sentenced to 5 years in prison, another received a suspended sentence, while four people were acquitted.

A widespread fraud system

This trial, the second part of the "Amidou Tiegnan" case (named after a civil servant convicted in late 2024), has brought to light well-oiled corruption schemes. To siphon off money intended for the country's two million displaced people, the perpetrators used:

  1. Fictitious markets ;
  2. Systematic overbilling ;
  3. Forgeries of signatures .
The context: In a country plagued by insecurity, this verdict sends a strong signal regarding the management of public resources. Combating illicit enrichment and money laundering remains an absolute priority as humanitarian needs continue to grow.
