Gabon : Le bras de fer continue entre enseignants et gouvernement
Despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding in the middle of last week, the truce will not take place. Meeting in general assemblies this Saturday, January 31, Gabonese teachers unanimously voted to continue their strike, which began more than a month ago.
During the rally in Libreville, negotiator Honorine Angue Mintsa presented the concessions obtained from the executive branch:
For the rank and file, this isn't enough. Clovis Ebo , leader of the SOS Education-La base movement, emphasizes that regularizing only a quarter of the workforce (5,000 out of 21,000) is insufficient. He also points to the illegality of the "pre-salary" and the lack of a clear timetable for implementing the reforms. "The government can and must go further to restore dignity to our profession," the strikers insist.
While the vote was unanimous in public, the continuation of the movement is not unanimously supported behind the scenes. Some teachers, speaking on condition of anonymity, fear that this radical approach will undermine their cause. They would have preferred a return to classes to test the government's good faith, even if it meant remobilizing later.
For now, the education sector remains paralyzed, with teachers waiting for a stronger signal and concrete commitments from the authorities.
