Ghana : Une nouvelle autoroute maritime pour relier l'Afrique de l'Ouest en 2026
The transport landscape in West Africa is about to undergo a major transformation. Ghana has officially announced the upcoming launch of a coastal shipping service that will directly connect Accra to Togo, Benin, and Nigeria.
This ambitious project, whose commercial start is set for February 2026 , aims to decongest road corridors and boost regional economic integration.
To carry out this initiative without burdening public finances, the Ghanaian authorities have relied on the expertise of the private sector. The service will be operated by an investor with two large-capacity vessels , specially designed for mixed transport (passengers and freight).
Currently in the technical preparation phase, discussions between stakeholders focus on three essential pillars:
Until now, trade between these four economic powers has relied almost exclusively on road transport, a mode of transport often hampered by traffic jams, road deterioration and the increasing number of border controls.
This new maritime route promises several key advantages:
"This maritime service is not intended to replace the road, but to offer a competitive and robust alternative to boost intra-regional trade," explain the project's promoters.
While the enthusiasm is genuine, the timeline remains tight. The next two years will be dedicated to obtaining international regulatory approvals and customs coordination between member countries.
The challenge is significant: to successfully offer affordable fares while guaranteeing profitability for the investor. If this model succeeds, it could serve as a benchmark for other maritime connectivity projects across the continent.
