Kenya : Trafic insolite de fourmis à l'aéroport de Nairobi
An unusual duo, a Chinese national and a Kenyan, are facing charges after a rather unusual seizure at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The two men are being prosecuted for illegal wildlife trafficking involving thousands of garden ants.
The arrest, which took place on March 10, 2026 , revealed meticulous but illegal logistics. Authorities discovered:
The duo did not have any permits from Kenyan authorities for the capture, possession or export of these insects.
Presented before Magistrate Irene Gichobi, the suspects pleaded not guilty . They face two major charges under the Wildlife Protection Act:
Defense attorney David Lusweti attempted to downplay the criminal nature of the case. According to him, his clients simply saw the ants as a "natural phenomenon" and an unrecognized economic opportunity , unaware that their sale was illegal.
Current situation: The two men remain in pretrial detention. The court has yet to decide on their release on bail before the trial begins.
