Kinshasa : Le plan audacieux pour transformer 17 000 tonnes de déchets quotidiens en énergie
Every morning, Kinshasa awakens to the roar of engines and a frenetic energy. Yet, behind this vitality lies a colossal challenge: 17,000 tons of waste produced daily . A scourge that suffocates the streets, clogs the canals, and threatens public health. But after years of makeshift solutions, the Congolese capital may be on the cusp of an ecological revolution.
Thursday, May 14, 2026, marked a turning point. Minister of State Guylain Nyembo officially received the final report of the feasibility studies for the Kinshasa Integrated Waste Management Project . More than just a technical document, it is the roadmap for a transformation.
"The ambition of this project is to erect a waste sorting and energy recovery center, designed not only as an operational infrastructure, but also as the pioneer of a model that can be reproduced on a metropolitan and national scale." — Guylain Nyembo , Minister of State.
This action plan is the result of several months of in-depth analysis conducted by the consortium of experts MAG–OGEC–CTI–W2W , under the supervision of the Ministry of Planning & CAD. Waste streams, technological choices, economic viability: everything was scrutinized to design a viable circular model.
The long-term goal is to make Kinshasa a national laboratory. The success of this infrastructure will serve as a model for other major cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The event took on a very concrete dimension when Guylain Nyembo symbolically presented the report to the Governor of the City-Province, Daniel Bumba Lubaki . The theoretical phase is now complete; the responsibility for implementation on the ground now rests with the provincial authorities.
Governor Bumba welcomed this major step forward, reaffirming his total commitment to the crucial steps ahead: securing funding, launching construction projects, and raising awareness among local populations.
One question remains: will this ambitious project succeed in breaking the cycle of unfulfilled promises? While skepticism is legitimate given the scale of the task, current signs are cause for optimism. The unprecedented alignment between the central government and the provincial government demonstrates a genuine political will to act.
Faced with the ecological emergency of 17,000 tons of waste produced daily, Kinshasa has no choice. The capital has the opportunity to transform its greatest burden into an engine of sustainable development. The plans are ready, the countdown has begun: the people of Kinshasa are now waiting to see the first results on the ground.
