Les États-Unis lèvent l'obligation de caution pour l'obtention de visas par les Maliens
Mali is no longer subject to the requirement to pay a deposit for its citizens to obtain a U.S. visa. The U.S. Department of State has formally announced the end of this measure, effective October 23, 2025.
End of the "Visa Bond" pilot program
This measure, called the "Visa Bond Pilot Program," required Malian applicants to deposit a financial guarantee ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. This amount was refundable only if the traveler actually returned to their home country.
Context of diplomatic tensions
The introduction of this deposit led to increased diplomatic tensions between Bamako and Washington. In response, the Malian authorities implemented a reciprocal measure, imposing the same requirements on American travelers traveling to Mali.
The U.S. "Visa Bond" program targeted countries with high rates of overstays by their citizens in the United States. In addition to Mali, it included other nations such as Mauritania, Tanzania, Gambia, Malawi, and Zambia.
