Madagascar: frappée par le cyclone Gezani, au moins 20 morts
Madagascar is in mourning after Cyclone Gezani struck, leaving at least 20 dead according to an initial official toll released by authorities. The storm violently hit the country's east coast, particularly the city of Toamasina , Madagascar's second-largest urban center.
Gusts of wind reaching up to 250 km/h swept through the port city, causing significant material damage. Homes were destroyed, roofs torn off, and several public infrastructures were severely damaged. Large areas are without power, and some roads remain impassable.
According to the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), dozens of people were also injured and several families displaced. Rescue operations are continuing to find any missing persons and provide emergency assistance to those affected.
Cyclone Gezani is part of a particularly active cyclone season in the Indian Ocean. Madagascar, regularly exposed to these extreme weather events, faces recurring challenges in terms of prevention, urban planning, and climate resilience.
Authorities are appealing for national and international solidarity while a full assessment of the damage is still underway. The death toll could rise in the coming hours.
