Nigeria : Des villageois ripostent aux bandits avec un “contre-enlèvement” inédit

In Katsina State, in northwestern Nigeria, villagers have adopted a novel method to confront kidnappers: “counter-kidnapping” . Faced with a series of kidnappings in their community, they decided to capture relatives of the bandits to force them to release the hostages.

The villagers made it clear during the calls to negotiate: "No ransom until our people are freed." This bold strategy paid off. According to reports, the bandits eventually gave in and released all the hostages. Some reports indicate that the kidnappers even gave each villager 30,000 naira for their safe return.

Once the hostages were freed, the villagers in turn released the kidnappers' families. This reverse negotiation process constitutes an unprecedented community response and demonstrates the ingenuity of the population in the face of insecurity.

This case illustrates the residents' determination to defend their safety, even outside the legal framework. In a context where kidnappings are frequent and impunity often total, this tactic has been presented by some as an example of community resilience and solidarity in the face of bandits.

To date, no Nigerian authority has officially confirmed this operation. The story therefore remains primarily reported by local media and villagers' accounts, but it draws attention to the resilience of local communities in the face of organized crime and the persistent security challenges in northern Nigeria.
