DRC: Resumption of violent fighting between the M23 and the FARDC in South Kivu

RDC : Reprise de Violents Combats entre le M23 et les FARDC au Sud-Kivu

Violent clashes broke out early Tuesday in the territories of Walungu and Uvira , in the province of South Kivu , in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

These hostilities pit the AFC/M23 rebels against the Congolese armed forces ( FARDC ).

đź’Ą Paralysis and Destruction in the Ruzizi Plain

  1. According to local sources, the fighting began shortly after 5 a.m. and quickly spread across several localities in the Ruzizi plain .
  2. All activities are currently paralyzed in areas such as Kamanyola, Katogota, Nyangezi and Kaziba .
  3. Civil society reports hearing detonations of heavy and light weapons .
  4. The Butuzi group is particularly affected, with reports of houses burned down in the villages of Ngando, Mwera and Muhumba .
  5. Injuries have also been reported in Karhembo .

🗓️ Context of the Clashes

The resumption of these battles follows a strengthening of AFC/M23 positions observed since last Sunday.

These hostilities come just days before the scheduled date for the final signing of the Washington peace agreement between the DRC and Rwanda.

Rwanda, regularly accused of supporting the AFC/M23 rebel group, continues to deny any involvement in the conflict.
