Sahara marocain : Washington soumet un projet de résolution entérinant le plan d’autonomie

The United States submitted to the Security Council a draft resolution endorsing the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented by Morocco in 2007, as the only serious and realistic basis for achieving a lasting political settlement of the Sahara issue.

Washington confirms its commitment to Morocco's autonomy plan. According to diplomatic sources in New York, the United States has distributed to the permanent members of the Security Council a new version of the draft resolution on the Sahara, which clearly identifies the Moroccan proposal as "the most credible and pragmatic basis" for definitively resolving the dispute.

The text calls on all parties concerned—Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria, and Mauritania—to resume, without preconditions, negotiations that have been suspended for several years. It specifies that "autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty" represents the most viable path to reaching a mutually acceptable political solution, after nearly half a century of deadlock.

A notable development in the matter within the Security Council

The American project already enjoys the support of several Western powers, notably France, the United Kingdom, and Spain, which sit within the informal group of "Friends of Western Sahara." This diplomatic convergence aims to accelerate the UN process before the end of MINURSO's current mandate, which Washington is proposing to extend until January 31, 2026.

The text also renews the Council's confidence in the role of the Secretary-General and his personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, who are tasked with relaunching the round tables between the four parties by the end of 2025. The stated objective is to reach an agreement based on the Moroccan autonomy plan before the expiration of the UN mission's mandate.

The draft resolution finally provides that the Secretary-General will present an interim report within six weeks of the renewal of the mandate, then a final evaluation before its end, in order to determine the follow-up to be given to the mission.

It should be recalled that the United States, through the voice of the American presidential advisor for Africa and the Middle East, Masad Boulos, has once again reaffirmed its support for Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces and announced its willingness to open a consulate in Dakhla.

In an interview with Al-Sharq TV, Boulos expressed the United States' willingness to open a consulate in the Moroccan Sahara during Donald Trump's second term, stating: "This Sahara is Moroccan. As we all know, President Trump has clearly recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and emphasized the need to reach a definitive solution to this conflict." He added that this conflict, which has lasted for decades, is now reaching a critical turning point requiring its definitive resolution. "It is worth remembering that this conflict will soon reach its 50th anniversary, and it is therefore truly time to put a definitive end to it," he insisted.
