Tanzanie : L'Opposition Exige de Nouvelles Élections et une Enquête Internationale
Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema , made serious accusations Tuesday regarding post-election violence. According to the party, security forces have secretly concealed the bodies of hundreds of people killed during recent waves of protests.
Chadema claims that at least 800 people have died in protests that erupted following the re-election of President Samia Suluhu Hassan , who was declared to have received over 97% of the vote. The opposition categorically refuses to recognize this victory.
Deogratius Munishi , spokesman for Chadema, stated that the current situation constitutes a "political vacuum" :
"Chadema and the public do not currently recognize Samia Suluhu Hassan as their leader. The entire country is therefore in a political vacuum. If you want to talk about the future of the country, you must talk about reforms and early elections so that Tanzanians have the opportunity to elect their leaders."
In addition to demanding new elections, the opposition insists that justice be served for the victims of the violence. The party is calling for an international investigation.
Spokesperson Munishi specifically called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the United Nations (UN) to intervene:
“We want those who have shot Tanzanians these past six days, those who have killed, to be held accountable. And this must be done by the ICC and the UN . And if they also want to negotiate, it is through new elections that you will give Tanzanians the opportunity to elect the leaders they want.”
The United Nations has already reacted, officially calling for a "thorough and impartial investigation" into the violence that occurred in Tanzania.
