Tchad: 33 morts dans un affrontement intercommunautaire

At least 33 people died Tuesday in an intercommunal clash in a village in Hadjer Lamis province in central Chad, local sources said Wednesday.

"The clashes that occurred around noon on Tuesday, November 4, pitted two sister communities from the provinces of Bahr-El-Gazel and Hadjer Lamis against each other," announced the National Office of Audiovisual Media (ONAMA), a public television channel in Chad, specifying that "the provisional toll reports several deaths and numerous injuries on both sides."

"The dispute sparked around a well claimed by the two communities, namely Kouka and Gorane, has left thirty-three dead and several injured," a presidential advisor told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Several ministers, senior local officials and an army contingent were dispatched to the scene, according to ONAMA.

"Despite the presence of authorities and the army, tensions are high on the ground," a local source told AFP.

"Similar events occurred in the same locality in 1999 and 2004, resulting in several dozen victims," explained a senior political official in the region.

Chad is frequently affected by episodes of intercommunal violence, particularly in certain rural areas where conflicts related to land, livestock, and access to water sometimes take a deadly turn.
