Tchad : La condamnation du GCAP ravive les craintes d'un verrouillage politique

The verdict was handed down on May 8, 2026: eight leaders of the opposition coalition GCAP were sentenced to eight years in prison. This judicial decision, far from being a mere news item, is perceived by the Chadian political class as a worrying turning point in the management of the protest movement.

A sham of justice according to the PSF

For supporters of the convicted men, there is no longer any doubt. Alifa Younous Mahamat , European coordinator of the Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF), denounces a trial devoid of fairness. According to him, this sentence is merely the latest link in a chain of repression aimed at neutralizing all dissenting voices.

He paints a bleak picture of the recent political situation, recalling:

  1. The conviction of Succès Masra .
  2. The stripping of citizenship from several activists in exile.
  3. The military assault on the PSF headquarters in 2024, which cost the life of its leader Yaya Dillo .
  4. The forced exile of Robert Gam , the party's general secretary, after months of secret detention.
"Justice has become an instrument of survival for the power, used to crush those who aspire to democratic change," laments Alifa Younous Mahamat.

A "purge campaign" under the Fifth Republic?

Concern is also growing within the ranks of the institutional opposition. Albert Pahimi Padacké , former Prime Minister and leader of the RNDT-Le Réveil, sees this verdict as a deliberate strategy by the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS).

According to the MP, since the transition to the Fifth Republic , the regime seems to have opted for an absolute concentration of power. This attitude, he argues, reflects a certain "nervousness" on the part of the ruling power in the face of an opposition that refuses to back down.

A democratic space on borrowed time

Today, a feeling of vulnerability prevails among Chadian political actors. Between arbitrary arrests and judicial harassment, the space for expression is shrinking rapidly.

The stakes are clear: beyond the fate of the eight GCAP convicts, it is the future of political pluralism in Chad that seems more compromised than ever by a regime hardening its positions.
