Tensions post-électorales : la circulation des mototaxis interdite dans plusieurs grandes villes du Cameroun

Administrative authorities took several measures on Wednesday, October 21, 2025, the eve of the post-election dispute, aimed at reducing the number of demonstrations in urban centers.

From Douala to Maroua via Dschang and Garoua, administrative authorities have taken measures to strengthen security on the eve of the proclamation of the results of the presidential election on October 12, 2025.

The goal is to prevent the protests challenging the Constitutional Council's results from escalating or degenerating, especially since the atmosphere has remained tense since the vote closed on October 12. Demonstrations are already taking place in cities such as Garoua, Douala, Dschang, and Yaoundé. In the city of Garoua, considered the epicenter of tensions, a teacher lost her life on Tuesday, October 21, during the demonstrations. Her funeral was held according to Muslim tradition.

In this city, the prefect of Benue, Oumarou Haman Wabi, has issued a decree prohibiting the circulation of motorcycles every day from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. until further notice. In the same city where gunshots were heard yesterday in the Sodecoton area, the rector of the University of Garoua, Boubakari Oumarou, has suspended classes from Wednesday, October 22 to Friday, October 24, 2025.

These two days are devoted to settling post-election disputes and announcing the election results in the capital, Yaoundé. During this time, in other strategic cities, authorities are enacting security measures similar to those in Garoua. In Maroua, a neighboring town in the Far North region, the prefect of Diamaré has banned motorcycle traffic and street demonstrations in the city from 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 23.

In Dschang, in the Menoua department of the West region, the prefect has banned motorcycle traffic on Thursday, October 23, 2023, starting at 6 a.m. At the university of the same name, the rector has decided to suspend classes. In Douala, in the Littoral region, Prefect Sylyac Marie Mvogo issued a decree banning motorcycle taxis in several parts of the city on Wednesday, October 22, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The same will apply on the day the presidential election results are announced and the day the president-elect is sworn in.

The affected neighborhoods are Deido, Ndokotti, New-Bell, Marché central, Yassa, Akwa-Nord, Bonamoussadi, Mbanya, New-Deido, Kotto, Nyalla, Makepe, Bepanda, New-Town, Nkolbong, Japoma and Mbangue. The administrative authority specifies that these measures aim to enable a better security network in the city of Douala.
