CEDEAO : Offensive stratégique à Abidjan pour booster le marché commun
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken another step in its integration process. Since Monday, April 27, 2026, Abidjan has been hosting a series of high-level meetings aimed at transforming the sub-region's trade potential into a genuine engine of growth.
The stakes are high: to consolidate a unified economic space. For Albert Siaw-Boateng , director at the ECOWAS Commission, the ambition is clear: to remove barriers to free movement and secure investments.
"The objective is to advance key interventions to strengthen the common market, particularly by stimulating trade within the sub-region."
At the heart of the discussions, the trade in food products emerged as the priority lever. Koawole Sofola , the trade director, revealed some telling figures:
However, a major challenge remains: 85% of these exchanges are informal . This lack of transparency prevents full integration into public development policies.

The recommendations resulting from this work will be submitted to the Ministers of the Interior and Immigration of the ECOWAS region. The ultimate goal is the adoption of binding measures to make intra-African trade the cornerstone of sustainable economic development in West Africa.
