Cuba : Vers une catastrophe humanitaire imminente ?
The worsening energy crisis in Cuba is raising fears of the worst. According to Gilles Baril, a specialist in the geopolitics of Latin America, the island is heading straight for a major humanitarian crisis that could have direct repercussions for its neighbors, particularly the United States.
The main concern lies in the instability of migration. If the situation continues to deteriorate, Gilles Baril fears a repeat of the "balsero" crisis (migrants fleeing in makeshift boats). Florida's geographical proximity would then place Washington on the front line of an unprecedented humanitarian emergency.
Historically, tourism has been the lifeblood of the Cuban economy, with Quebecers and Canadians representing the most loyal clientele since the revolution. To "restart the machine" and inject the foreign currency necessary for the country's survival, Gilles Baril proposes two courses of action:
“Canada could act as a mediator to find solutions and resolve the energy impasse that lies at the heart of this disaster.” — Gilles Baril
