IA : Le Burkina Faso passe à l'offensive pour briser la barrière des langues

After Benin and Nigeria, it is now the turn of the "Land of Upright Men" to claim its place on the world map of artificial intelligence. Faced with a technology that is predominantly Anglophone or Francophone, Burkina Faso launched a strategic project on March 24, 2026, in Ouagadougou: the creation of AI models capable of communicating in local languages.

Inclusion at the heart of the project

The stakes are high: integrating the millions of Burkinabe excluded from the digital world due to their lack of proficiency in colonial languages. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Transition, linguists, researchers, and AI experts have come together to lay the foundations for linguistic formalization .

The project focuses on four linguistic pillars of the country:

  1. Moore (spoken by more than 50% of the population);
  2. Dioula ;
  3. Fulfulde ;
  4. The gulmancema .

Creating an AI "Made in Burkina Faso"

The objective goes beyond simple translation. It involves building massive datasets to train machines in speech recognition and audio synthesis. In collaboration with Burkina Faso's national broadcaster, Radio-Télévision du Burkina (RTB), the government aims to develop an AI adapted to the local socio-cultural context, aligning with its vision of digital transformation by 2030.

"We want artificial intelligence at the service of all Burkinabe, without exception." — Ministry note.

A continental dynamic

Burkina Faso is not alone in this race for technological sovereignty. The African AI landscape is changing rapidly:

  1. Nigeria: Launch in 2025 of N-ATLAS v1 , a model based on Meta's Llama-3 architecture, capable of understanding Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.
  2. Benin: Continuation of the JaimeMaLangue project to digitize the national linguistic heritage.
  3. Private initiatives: Google has deployed the WAXAL program, collecting voice data in 21 African languages in partnership with local universities to ensure ethical data management.

Towards a decolonized AI?

This surge of activity marks a historic turning point. Africa no longer wants to be a mere consumer of solutions designed in Silicon Valley. By producing its own data and shaping its own algorithms, the continent is ensuring that its cultural realities are not erased by the algorithmic revolution.
