The case that shocked America has reached its legal conclusion. Kouri Richins , 36, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole . Convicted of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, she had tried to cover up her crime by publishing a children's book about the loss of a loved one.

A cold-blooded fentanyl crime

The events date back to March 2022. According to the prosecution, Kouri Richins served her husband a lethal cocktail containing fentanyl , a powerful synthetic opioid. The autopsy revealed a concentration five times higher than the lethal dose .

The investigation also showed that this was not a first attempt: she had previously tried to poison him via a sandwich, causing a serious illness in the victim.

Cynicism in the service of profit

Beyond the homicide itself, it was the accused woman's behavior after the tragedy that shocked public opinion:

  1. The motive: Eric Richins' death allowed him to receive a $4 million inheritance, supplemented by $2 million in secretly purchased life insurance policies.
  2. The literary deception: A few months after the crime, she published Are You With Me ?, a book supposed to help her three sons overcome the death of their father.

The chilling testimony of the children

Although Kouri Richins continues to deny the facts, citing her faith and mutual infidelities within the couple, the testimonies of her own children have weighed heavily in the balance.

During the hearing, letters written by his sons (aged 5, 7 and 9 at the time of the events) were read by psychologists:

“I won’t feel safe if you’re outside,” one of them wrote, highlighting his mother’s lack of apology. Another confided his relief at no longer living with a mother who was “always drunk” after the tragedy, concluding: “I miss my father, but I don’t miss my old life.”

Judge Richard Mrazik ruled that this mother was now "too dangerous to be free" .
