The former head of state was sentenced on September 25 to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy, a sentence accompanied by a pre-trial detention order for having allowed his associates to approach Muammar Gaddafi's Libya to finance his victorious 2007 campaign. Sarkozy has appealed the sentence. He has been incarcerated since Tuesday in La Santé prison, a first in the history of the Republic.
