In response to the precarious situation of households affected by the recent evictions in Abidjan, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reacted swiftly. On Friday, June 26, 2026, in Plateau, the organization delivered a significant donation of non-food items worth 44 million CFA francs to the Ivorian government.

This donation was officially received by Myss Belmonde Dogo, Minister of National Cohesion, Solidarity and the Fight Against Poverty. It will be used to supply the large-scale distribution operation planned for Sunday, June 28th in the Koumassi district .

Details of humanitarian aid

This emergency package is designed to meet the immediate life-saving needs of families who have lost everything:

  1. Sleeping & Lighting: 800 plastic mats and 400 solar lamps.
  2. Hygiene & Health: 700 intimate hygiene kits (for women and girls), 2,500 pieces of soap and 1,000 20-liter containers.
  3. Kitchen: 400 pots, accompanied by various other essential items.

A responsiveness praised by the government

This humanitarian action comes just three days after an emergency meeting (on June 23) between the ministry and the agencies of the United Nations System in Ivory Coast.

“On behalf of President Alassane Ouattara, Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, and the government, I express my deep gratitude to UNICEF for its responsiveness. Every mat, every cooking kit, every bar of soap goes far beyond material aid: it represents a return to dignity for these mothers, children, and young girls.” — Myss Belmonde Dogo, Minister of Solidarity

The minister also pledged that the distribution would be fair, transparent and with full respect for the affected populations.

Restoring dignity in times of crisis

For Jean François Basse, UNICEF representative in Ivory Coast, this gesture symbolizes a crucial first step towards the psychological and material reconstruction of the victims.

He emphasized that enabling a family to cook, have light, and maintain hygiene is essential for overcoming the trauma of losing a home. Mr. Basse concluded by reiterating UNICEF's continued support to the Ivorian government to optimize the management of and response to future humanitarian crises.
