Mondial U20 : Le Maroc au sommet du monde après une victoire de prestige face à l'Argentine
The Atlas Lions accomplished a resounding feat this Sunday, October 20 in Chile, winning their first ever U20 World Cup title by beating Argentina, the most successful team in the tournament's history, by a score of 2 goals to 0. This Moroccan team, imperial and inspired, made history, crowning an exceptional journey.
From the very start, Morocco displayed disconcerting control and efficiency against the Albicelestes . The tension was palpable in the stadium, but the young Lions quickly took the upper hand. The turning point of the match, and the first brilliant moment, came in the 10th minute: Zabiri, brought down by the opposing goalkeeper at the edge of the area, won an ideal free kick.
Although the Argentinian goalkeeper got away with a yellow card, he could do nothing a few moments later about Zabiri's curling and masterful shot, a true masterpiece which opened the scoring in the 15th minute (0-1).
Argentina tried to respond, multiplying their attacks, but the Moroccan defense held firm. Better still, the Atlas Lions doubled their lead in the 28th minute, again thanks to the indispensable Zabiri, who scored a magnificent volley to secure a brace.
Despite the Argentinian pressure at the end of the first period, the tactical discipline of the Moroccans, with two well-grouped low blocks, forced the South Americans into vain attempts from the wings.
After the break, with a two-goal lead, Morocco continued their momentum, controlling the pace against an Argentina team that was searching for solutions. Tactical adjustments by both coaches failed to reverse the Moroccan dominance.
We noted a timid shot from Fernandez (54th) which went off target and a spectacular run from Maamma over fifty meters which ignited the crowd.
Led by a stalwart defense and a Zabiri who was definitely in a state of grace, the Lion Cubs controlled the game. As time ticked by, the Argentinian pressure intensified, but the Moroccan solidity was impressive.
Mohamed Ouahbi's men, tightly packed and disciplined, sealed off every space, forcing their opponents into long-range, often inaccurate shots. The only real threat, Prestianni, made a number of attempts, but without finding the target.
And when the defense was caught out, Gomis was decisive. The Moroccan goalkeeper, who has been imperious throughout the tournament, made a crucial save in the 83rd minute against a dangerous shot from Silvetti.
Driven by exemplary solidarity and flawless tactical discipline, Morocco held firm until the final whistle, achieving a historic feat to clinch their first U20 world title.
