Sénats d'Afrique : Le Maroc succède à la Côte d'Ivoire pour un nouveau cycle diplomatique

At the conclusion of the Annual Conference of the Association of African Senates (ASA), which ended this Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Rabat, an important chapter in the continent's parliamentary history came to a close. Kandia Camara , President of the Ivorian Senate, officially passed the torch to her Moroccan counterpart, Mohamed Ould Errachid , President of the House of Councillors.

Kandia Camara's legacy: from foundation to expansion

In less than two years, driven by Côte d'Ivoire, the ASA has grown significantly. Founded in Yamoussoukro, the organization has seen its membership double to become a truly pan-African platform:

  1. Geographic diversity: Integration of major players such as Nigeria , DRC , Egypt and Morocco .
  2. Linguistic pluralism: The association now includes Arabic-speaking, English-speaking, French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking nations.
  3. Increased influence: This dynamism reflects the vitality of Ivorian parliamentary diplomacy, driven by the vision of Alassane Ouattara.

To crown her pioneering work, Kandia Camara was elevated to the rank of Honorary President of the institution.

Accelerated institutionalization

The Rabat session allowed the rules of operation of the ASA to be enshrined in law in order to guarantee its sustainability:

Function Terms agreed upon
Presidential term Set at 2 years .
General Secretariat Provided by the Senate of Ivory Coast (host country).
Governance Annual meeting and biennial Conference of Presidents.
Solidarity Reaffirmed commitment to addressing the continent's security and climate challenges.

Morocco, a new engine of South-South cooperation

The accession of Mohamed Ould Errachid to the presidency marks a key milestone for the Kingdom of Morocco. This transfer of power underscores King Mohammed VI 's growing commitment to pragmatic African integration.

Participants unanimously praised the leadership of the Moroccan monarch, whose support was crucial to the success of the Rabat meetings. By hosting the next annual meeting in 2027 , Morocco confirms its commitment to transforming the Africa Summit into a major lever of influence for regional stability.

The challenge for tomorrow: With some twenty member nations, the Association of African Senates is no longer a project in development, but a political reality. The new president's mission will be to transform this legacy into concrete legislative actions to address the economic and social crises shaking the continent.
