Lutte contre le terrorisme : des militaires américains déployés au Nigeria pour former l’armée
Nigeria is strengthening its security cooperation with the United States in the fight against jihadist groups. The Nigerian Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of an initial contingent of American military personnel at Bauchi airfield in the northeast of the country, as part of a training and technical support mission for the armed forces.
According to the authorities, these personnel are specialists acting exclusively in an advisory capacity. "These are not combat forces," the ministry stated in a press release, emphasizing respect for national sovereignty. In total, approximately 200 American military personnel are to be deployed gradually to support the Nigerian army in strengthening its operational capabilities.
This cooperation aims to improve intelligence, operational planning and the maintenance of military equipment, in a context marked by the persistence of attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWAP) in the northeastern region.
The choice of Bauchi, an area close to the theater of operations, responds to logistical and strategic imperatives. This partnership also reflects a rapprochement between Abuja and Washington on security issues, as the fight against terrorism remains a major challenge for the stability of the Lake Chad Basin and the whole of West Africa.
