Yamoussoukro : Coup d'arrêt majeur au trafic illégal de gaz butane

Ivorian authorities are stepping up their efforts in the fight against clandestine energy networks. A large-scale operation, carried out on the night of January 28-29, 2026 , led to the dismantling of a major illegal energy transfer network in Yamoussoukro.

An impressive record

Under the aegis of the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) and with the support of the Transnational Crime Unit (UCT) , the intervention had a strong impact:

  1. Mass seizures: More than 2,000 bottles of type B6 and 25 bottles of B12 were confiscated.
  2. Equipment dismantled: 24 gas transfer machines were destroyed.
  3. Firm closures: Several clandestine sites have been sealed off and the suspects arrested have been brought before the courts.

Transferring waste: An urban "time bomb"

Gas refilling involves emptying gas cylinders to refill others using makeshift methods. This strictly prohibited practice transforms residential areas into veritable powder kegs. With no safety standards in place, the risk of explosion, devastating fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning is constant for residents.

Note: This diverted gas not only supplies homes, but also illegally serves as fuel for some municipal taxis, thus multiplying the risks of tragedies on public roads.

A coordinated national offensive

This operation is not an isolated incident. It marks an intensification of the firm strategy desired by the Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly . Since the beginning of January 2026, inspections have been stepped up to clean up the sector and protect the public.

Call for citizen collaboration

The DGH reaffirms its determination to eradicate these practices throughout the Ivorian territory. To succeed in this fight for public safety, the authorities call on everyone to be vigilant.

A freephone number is available to report any suspicious activity: 1699.
