Guinée : Décès en détention du commandant « Toumba » Diakité
The former aide-de-camp of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, Commander Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité , known as "Toumba", passed away on Wednesday , March 25, 2026. A central figure in recent Guinean political history, he was serving a 10-year prison sentence following the landmark verdict in the trial concerning the September 28, 2009 massacres.
According to information released by the Prison Administration, the inmate's health had been under increased surveillance since the beginning of March. A medical examination conducted at the Ignace Deen University Hospital had already revealed alarming symptoms.
The final diagnosis revealed a strangulated linea alba hernia , which had led to generalized acute peritonitis . Despite an emergency transfer to the military hospital at Camp Samory Touré on the night of March 23rd after collapsing in his cell, intensive care was unsuccessful. His death was officially pronounced at 4:35 a.m.
Toumba Diakité was incarcerated in the Coyah prison. His name will forever be linked to the trial of September 28, 2009, the outcome of which in July 2024 marked a turning point for Guinean justice.
Convicted of crimes against humanity —including murder, rape, and torture—he was sentenced alongside former junta leader Moussa Dadis Camara. His death marks the end of the legal saga for one of the most high-profile figures of this dark period in Guinea's history.
Note: Transparency around the circumstances of this medical death seems to be a priority for the prison authorities, who specify that the medical follow-up procedures were respected in the presence of his lawyer.
