Belgique : mobilisation massive contre les coupes sociales du gouvernement
Belgian police used a water cannon to disperse thousands of protesters in Brussels on Tuesday as unions called for a national strike against austerity measures.
Minor clashes broke out in the city center between law enforcement and protesters, some of whom beat drums and honked horns while chanting slogans against cuts to social welfare programs.
Authorities were also seen escorting some people onto buses before the situation escalated.
Organizers estimated the turnout at more than 150,000 people, while police counted 80,000 demonstrators.
Belgium's three main trade unions organized the demonstration as well as national strikes against cuts to the pension and health systems proposed by Prime Minister Bart De Wever.
The latter promised to cut spending in an attempt to overcome Belgium's economic challenges.
