Crise des otages au Niger : Boko Haram exige 750 millions FCFA pour six survivants
The jihadist threat has reached a new level of horror in the Lake Chad region. Following the abduction of seven Chadian nationals on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 , in Nigerien territory, the Boko Haram terrorist group has hardened its stance. The brutal execution of one of the captives has intensified the pressure on the families and authorities.
The kidnappers have set a ransom of 750 million CFA francs for their freedom. The demands are tailored to the hostages' profiles:
The abduction took place near the town of Mariyari , as the doctor was returning from Niamey to attend his father's funeral.
To expedite payment, Boko Haram is using social media. A video, though not yet officially authenticated, shows Dr. Lamsikréo surrounded by five fellow captives. In this now-viral video, the hostages make a desperate plea for help.
According to experts and human rights advocates, the dissemination of these images and the summary execution of a first hostage constitute a deliberate strategy by terrorists to provoke a sense of urgency and break the resistance of families.
Given the scale of the sums claimed, the State is not the only party being called upon:
Despite repeated offensives by the Chadian army, the Lake Chad basin remains a sanctuary for Boko Haram. The group has established its headquarters there, using kidnapping for ransom as a veritable economic system to finance its criminal activities.
This latest tragedy underlines the persistent security insecurity in this border area, where civilians remain the primary victims of jihadist networks.
