Faced with rumors of shortages and soaring prices circulating on social media, the Ivorian government is taking action. This Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Minister of Trade, Industry, and Handicrafts, Kalil Konaté, personally visited the livestock market in Anyama, north of Abidjan, to assess the supply situation a few weeks before Tabaski (Eid al-Adha).

Reassuring stock levels and prices for all budgets

Accompanied by local and administrative authorities, the minister was able to see firsthand the reality of the market. The verdict is clear: the parks are full.

  1. Volumes: Nearly 165,000 sheep are already available on the national territory, for an overall need estimated at around 350,000 animals for the festive period.
  2. Prices: The offer is diverse and caters to all budgets. Kalil Konaté himself indicated that he had bought animals for between 90,000 and 100,000 FCFA, specifying that the overall range varies from 75,000 to over 250,000 FCFA .
"The availability of supply allows us to drive down prices. I invite people to come and see for themselves the abundance of livestock on the ground." — Goran Modeste, head of the Anyama livestock park.

A logistical challenge and an opportunity for youth

To facilitate the arrival of livestock in Abidjan, the Autonomous District has deployed a rigorous logistical system. The Anyama site, the only official reception point in the economic capital, receives between 30 and 90 trucks daily, each carrying up to 354 sheep. To avoid congesting road traffic, the convoys cross border corridors (Noé, Wangolo, Pogo, Tengréla, etc.) and travel primarily at night.

Towards sovereignty in the livestock and meat sector

This period of high consumption also highlights a structural issue: Ivory Coast still depends on neighboring countries to cover 55 to 56% of its livestock needs, with national production only providing 44 to 45%.

The minister used this platform to launch a passionate appeal to Ivorian youth and public investors. Following the President's vision, he encouraged young people to invest in this promising sector in order to strengthen the country's food self-sufficiency.

Industry players confirm a "saturated" market

Issiaka Sawadogo, chairman of the board of the West African Confederation of the Livestock and Meat Sector, welcomed this ministerial initiative. He confirmed that the market was far from the alarmist prices circulating online.

  1. Standard sheep: Available between 125,000 and 225,000 FCFA.
  2. Exceptional sheep (the largest): Negotiated between 375,000 and 425,000 FCFA.

With shipments continuing to arrive daily at the borders, Ivorian consumers can rest easy. Everything is being done to ensure that Tabaski 2026 is marked by abundance and cost control.
